I'm often asked why I chose to open Trapped in a Room with a Zombie in a downtown location, rather than out in the suburbs.
I'll admit I had my doubts back in the summer of 2014, which is when the decision needed to be made. At that time, "Detroit" and "comeback" didn't often appear in the same sentence as they do now. And as someone who didn't previously spend a lot of time downtown, my preference was definitely the 'burbs.
Am I glad we found the Penobscot Building. It's not only truly historic, having been constructed in 1928, but also just a beautiful structure in a fantastic location.
Indeed, we have some amazing neighbors: Lafayette Coney Island, Quicken Loans, the Guardian Building, Campus Martius, Hart Plaza, and, just across Jefferson, no less than General Motors. (The icing on the cake was when a Which Wich location opened right inside Penobscot!)
Now that Detroit is experiencing such an amazing renaissance, I'm doubly proud to operate a business right in the heart of it. So make Escape Plans part of your next visit to Detroit. Like the city itself, it's an escape from the ordinary!
